The house that built the Nature Aquarium style
Aqua Design Amano (ADA) was founded in 1982 by the late Takashi Amano, the photographer and aquascaper credited with turning planted-tank keeping into a design discipline. Rather than treating an aquarium as a container for fish, Amano approached it the way a landscape photographer approaches a composition — using stone, driftwood, and plants to recreate the feeling of a forest floor, a riverbed, or a mountain stream, in glass.
That philosophy is baked into every ADA product. Aqua Soil isn't just substrate — it's engineered to buffer pH and release nutrients in a way that supports the exact planting density Amano's layouts demanded. The same goes for ADA's CO2 systems, Solar RGB lighting, and the annual International Aquatic Plants Layout Contest (IAPLC), which ADA still runs and which remains the benchmark competition for the style.
We stock ADA because it's the reference point every other aquascaping brand gets measured against — if you're building a serious Nature Aquarium layout, ADA Amazonia soil and a properly specced CO2 system are usually where the build starts.
